The Yoga Postures
The individual yoga poses (also called yoga asanas), as well as the particular sequence of yoga exercises, are perfectly designed to relieve tension in the body. Yoga poses systematically contract or stretch the muscles of the body, releasing tension and leading to a profound feeling of relaxation. Asanas improve the flexibility of the spine and the joints, and strengthen the body’s muscles, glands and internal organs. The body is invigorated and toned, and regains its ideal form. Regular asana practice releases hitherto unknown sources of energy and leads to a whole new feeling of physical well-being.
The benefits of the postures
• Deep relaxation for the body and mind
• Stress management
• Maintaining/developing of flexibility
• Building up of muscle strength and length
• Strengthening of the respiratory and circulatory systems
• Improved supply of nutrients to all tissues
• Prevention and alleviation of chronic illnesses (cardiovascular disease, asthma, depression
and others)
• Correction of faulty posture and its long-term effects (for example, a rounded back)
• Slowing down of the ageing process
• Enhanced power of concentration
• Promotion of physical and mental well-being
The yoga class in Barnes is small and friendly and offers an excellent opportunity to learn the basic yoga techniques and to put them into regular practice.
I look forward to seeing you for a class soon.

Om Shanti,

Give your life a boost! Come and experience what yoga has to offer
– develop a new healthy, flexible body, improve your energy and vitality through deep breathing and discover the art of relaxation!
Yoga offers simple, practical techniques for removing stress, improving health and developing peace of mind.

The Five Points
of Yoga
By closely observing the lifestyles and needs of people in the West Swami Vishnu-devananda synthesised the ancient wisdom of yoga into five basic principles that could easily be incorporated into one’s own lifestyle to provide the foundation for healthy living. These are:
Proper Exercise: works systematically on all parts of the body – stretching and toning the muscles and ligaments, keeping the spine flexible and improving the circulation.
Proper Breathing: means breathing fully and rhythmically, making use of all, not just part of the lungs, to increase the intake of oxygen. Yogic breathing exercises (pranayama) recharge the body and also steady the mind.
Proper Relaxation: releases tension in the muscles and rests the whole system. It carries over into all your activities and teaches you how to conserve energy and let go of worries.
Proper Diet: is a healthy well-balanced vegetarian diet which keeps the body light and supple and the mind calm.
Positive Thinking and Meditation: helps to remove negative thoughts and still the mind.
